News and blog

Welcome to the blog.

Hi Friends,

The weather tomorrow is supposed to be fantastic.  With that in mind, we decided to have a meat sale tomorrow.  We have attached a pre-order sheet with current inventory on it.  There are some items we will run out of during the sale, so pre-ordering is a great way to have a better chance to get what you would like.  It also saves time at pick up.

We will be open 3-5 tomorrow, a little later than normal, so hopefully that works with your schedule.  If that time frame doesn't work, feel free to email the attached pre-order sheet and we can set up a time on Sunday or an evening during the week to pick it up.

We have open spaces for freezer beef going in to the butcher on April 22nd and May 20th.  Please let us know if you have questions or would like to reserve a portion.

One last note, on Saturday May 5th, we are very proud to be hosting the Butler County Farm Day at our farm from 10-2 in conjuction with Ohio State Extension and Butler County Soil and Water Conservation District and Butler County Farm Bureau.  It is a large event held every other year at a hosting farm in the county.  We will have the entire farm and animals will be on display, along with many farm organizations having displays and presentations.  It will be a great time and a great way to learn about what we do and how we do it.  We hope everyone can make this special event.

We hope to see you tomorrow afternoon.

All the best,

Hi Friends,

Things are busy on the farm and we haven't even gotten to Spring yet.  We have had quite a few lambs, calves and kids (goats) in the past couple of months.  We have been so busy, we haven't had many days available for a meat sale.  We have decided to have a sale tomorrow, February 16th from 2-4.  We are also posting the date of our next meat sale, which will be Saturday March 9th from 2-4.

We are running a "slow cooker sampler" special for this week's sale.  The special will be one chuck roast, one rolled rump roast, one chuck flat roast and 5 pounds of stew meat.  That combination will receive 10% off of the regular retail price.  We have created a price list with our currently available items.  I have inserted it into this email.  We encourage pre-orders, especially this week, because we will be a little under staffed.  All pre-orders received before midnight tonight will receive 5% off the entire order. Pre-orders can be picked up as early as 1:45 tomorrow until 4 p.m.

One last note, at the end of this month we will be taking pork and lamb to the butcher.  If you have any interest in purchasing a pig or lamb for freezer meat, please let us know so we can reserve your animal.  We will have pricing and information published on the website in the next few days regarding those items.  We also have openings for the next couple of months for freezer beef as well.

We hope to see you soon.

Hi Friends,

I hope all is well.  We are having a great year on the farm.  The crops are doing well despite a dry July.  It looks like the recent rains will help the crops finish strong and it should help the grass grow a little more before things start to cool down.  We are picking up meat goats and some piglets this weekend.  We are excited for the new additions to the farm.  They will be available for sale later this fall.

We will be having a meat sale at the farm next Saturday, the 25th from 2-4 p.m..  I hope you have time to join us, but if not, feel free to call or email and we can set up a time to pick up a custom order.  On Saturday we will have a wide variety of beef, chicken, lamb and a little bit of pork.  All cuts are individually vacuum packaged.  We will be accepting pre-orders at the meat sale for chickens that will be ready for pick-up the following weekend.  I will send out an additional email with a pre-order price list a little later.  You can email it back, or bring it with you to the meat sale.

On another note, we are getting close to filling all of our freezer beef openings for October.  Currently we have a half and quarter beef available.  We still have openings for November and December, so if you or a friend is planning on filling your freezer this fall, please email us to reserve your spot.

We hope to see you next Saturday.  Enjoy your weekend!

Hi Friends,

I hope this email finds everyone doing well.  We have been busy around the farm getting ready for the upcoming farming season.  We are adding bees to the farm this year and we are very excited about that.  Our first group of bees arrive tomorrow morning.

Speaking of tomorrow, we will be having a meat sale at the farm from 2-4.  The weather looks great and we are excited to have everyone out.  We will have a variety of cuts sold by the cut of beef, chicken, lamb and pork.  Because it is early in the season, we have a limited availability of chicken and pork.  I just picked up beef from the butcher yesterday morning, so there will be a good variety of steaks available, while supplies last.  We are running a special on chicken wings for $2.00/lb.

Please feel free to call or email if you have questions.  We look forward to seeing you.  The farm is located at 2850 Lanes Mill Rd., Oxford, OH. 45056.

Hi Friends,

This summer has been a whirlwind.  The addition of a new farm at the beginning of the summer has been quite an adventure.  We have been keeping very busy with new sheep, pigs, chickens, llamas, and even miniature horses.  Our cows have enjoyed the new pastures and the new sights and smells.

With all of the new things for our family and animals this year we are happy to announce that we will be taking a break from the chores to open the new farm up to our friends and customers.  We will be hosting a meat sale this Saturday, the 23rd from 1-4.  With the beginning of Fall, some of our animals that were out on pasture all summer are nearing harvest.  To celebrate the end of our first summer on our new farm, we will be taking 10% off the price of all the meats we have in larger quantities, that you can purchase by the box.  Hamburger is packaged in quantities of 50# and most other cuts are approximately 25-30#. It's a great opportunity to buy our all natural meats at a wholesale price.  You can split the boxes up with family and friends, or keep them all for yourself.  We will also have lots of other individual cuts of beef and chicken as well that you can purchase by the cut.

We are proud to share that we are also offering lamb and pork for this sale.  These cuts are from our first groups of lambs and pigs that we have raised.  We have a variety of cuts from each of the animals including, leg of lamb, lamb chops, ground lamb, pork sausage, bacon, ham, and pork chops.

If you would like to reserve your spot for freezer beef or lamb please let us know.  We will have 6 grass fed lambs available in a couple of weeks and multiple opportunities for our all natural beef throughout this fall and winter.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday from 1-4 at our new farm.  The address is 2850 Lanes Mill Rd., Oxford, OH. 45056.  It is near Butler Rural Electric.  If you would like to reserve your box quantity of the cuts below feel free to email or call.  Some of the cuts are in shorter supply.

Here is a list of the cuts we have available in box quantities:

Hamburger in 1# packages

Chicken Wings

Ground Chicken

Chicken Bratwurst or Chorizo (1# packages or Links)

Short Ribs

Sirloin Steaks

Chuck Roasts

Hi friends,

I hope this finds everyone doing well.  Things are going pretty well around the farm, all things considered.  We have been working very hard this year once again, in our relentless pursuit of providing the highest quality meats known to mankind. We have been up to a few new things around the farm this year and I have included some of the things that are noteworthy.

Our cattle will be getting a couple new items in their diet a little later this year.  This Spring we harvested our very first crop of triticale.  It is a hybrid cross between wheat and rye.  It is high in protein and also has the bonus of a high sugar content.  We mowed and baled it right before it started to produce seed in order to capture the highest amount of nutrients the plant would produce.  We baled it at approximately 60% moisture and wrapped it in a thin layer of plastic so that it would be sealed in an oxygen free environment.  Without oxygen, the bales will ferment to produce a highly digestible and naturally preserved feed.  It is essentially the same process we use for our corn silage, but we can feed it one bale at a time to the cows.  We will start to feed the triticale later in the year.

Besides providing excellent feed, the triticale is planted in the fall and will hold the ground in place over the winter to reduce erosion.  It will also scavenge any excess fertilizer that the previous corn crop may not have utililzed.  It keeps beneficial bacteria in the soil working during a period when most fields are bare and the bacteria die off due to lack of food.  We think this may become a staple in our crop rotation.

We also took the opportunity to follow the triticale with a crop called sudangrass.  It is a fine bladed annual grass that is also high in sugar content and palatability.  It grows very quickly and doesn't have the water requirements that corn does.  So far this month it hasn't mattered, but traditionally we are dry throughout the summer.  We chose this crop to hedge our bet to produce the feed our cattle will need to carry them through the winter if it happened to get dry and our corn crop would suffer.  We plan on chopping the sudangrass and putting it in the silo, or making it into hay if the weather permits.

Our chickens will be getting the luxury of new crates to take them to the butcher.  Previously we loaded them into our stock trailer and took them to the butcher.  From there we would catch them a second time and put them into crates at the butcher.  After many backaches we finally made the significant investment in the crates.  The result will be less stress on the birds from only being handled once and a cooler ride to the butcher.  The cool ride comes from the ability to be loaded on an open sided trailer to catch a breeze on the ride.

We are through the initial testing phase on an offering of naturally raised pork for your home freezer.  Initial feedback has been that the pork is much cleaner tasting and that it has a unique flavor you can't get in the grocery.  My sister Megan and her boyfriend Neil have taken on the project to fill a much needed void in our product offering.  The pigs are being raised on Neil's farm near Ashland, OH.  They are raised in deep straw bedding and have access to the outdoors 24/7.  The pigs aren't raised in confinement barns which means they don't live over a pit which holds their manure all of their lives.  Our pigs get fresh air all the time which translates into cleaner meat.  We are still finalizing logistics so please stay tuned for info to reserve your pork in our first I.P.O. (initial pig offering).

One last noteworthy experiment around the farm is our first group of egg laying hens.  We purchased 20 egg laying birds to put out on pasture for extremely healthy eggs.  They are an assortment of rare breeds.  We chose these hens because they lay eggs and they all have a unique look to them.  I will post pictures to the website as they mature.  The plan is to build a portable chicken coop and to move it around the farm for the birds to eat fresh greens, bugs and worms.  We will let you know when they start to produce eggs.

We have up to one whole freezer beef available right now.  The cattle went to the butcher yesterday so the beef will be processed in approximately two weeks.  If you would like a portion of this beef, or the whole thing please let me know, first come, first served.  I need to know by the end of next week in order to reserve it.  We will have more freezer beef available at the beginning of August.  Supply will be getting tighter after August so less freezer beef will be available after that.

The first group of pasture raised chickens will be available on July 10th.  In the near future I will send an ordering guide to fill out and return.  The next group after that will be the second week in August.

Thank you for your continued support of Reserve Run Family Farm.  We work extremely hard to produce the highest quality, responsibly raised natural meats.  We appreciate your business and the references you provide to your friends and family.  If you have any questions, comments or concerns please let us know.

All the best,

Drew Johnson
